Field Marshal Asim Munir discusses regional security with US Secretary of State

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Defense Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir held wide ranging talks with US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio on issues of global and regional security. The two sides also discussed ongoing counter terrorism cooperation between their respective countries in their meeting in Germany on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

It is believed that the two sides discussed the possibility of deployment of Pakistani troops in Gaza as part of the international Stabilization force. The US administration has formally requested Pakistan to contribute 3500 troops for the force.

Pakistan, at the moment appears reluctant to contribute the troops as there is a concern in Pakistani official circles that Pakistan forces might be put into the situation of performing the task of disarming Palestinian groups.
Pakistan has also made it clear that its troops would only serve in Gaza under UN Security Council mandate.

There is widespread public support for Pakistan sending troops to Gaza but only under UN mandate, according to latest public opinion polls.

“COAS & CDF interacted with a number of dignitaries. He met with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and discussed matters of mutual interest, including global and regional security dynamics and counterterrorism cooperation” reads a press release of ISPR.

Pakistan appears to be performing the function of a net security provider to the Middle Eastern countries since Israeli strikes against Qatari capital of Doha.
Pakistani diplomacy was also instrumental in convincing Tehran and Washington to commence talks instead of drifting towards a regional war which could prove to be highly devastating for most of the regional countries.

It is generally believed that CDF, Field Marshal Asim Munir and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed all these aspects of the regional security situation.

Pakistan has been at the centre of regional security diplomacy amid growing concerns that the region might again plunge into another devastating war.
