Pakistan: A Reliable and Key Pillar of Global Peace

The United Nations Security Council has been informed that the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has become a serious and growing threat in South and Central Asia. To what extent does this statement support Pakistan’s narrative? This was stated by Denmark’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Sandra Jensen Lundy, during a briefing of the Security Council’s Committee on Sanctions against ISIS and Al-Qaeda at a meeting in New York on Wednesday.
She further noted that the proscribed TTP, which poses a threat to regional peace, receives essential and substantial support from the Taliban government in Afghanistan. Sandra Jensen also reported that approximately 6,000 TTP militants are present in Afghanistan and have carried out multiple major and deadly attacks on Pakistani soil. She emphasized that the assistance provided by Afghan Taliban authorities has further strengthened terrorist activities in Pakistan.
She added that after retreating in the Middle East, ISIS has established Africa as a new center, while the movement of foreign terrorist elements between Syria, Africa, and Central Asia continues to be a concern. Sandra Jensen said that ISIS-Khorasan, with at least 2,000 fighters, poses a major threat to the region, targeting Shia communities, Afghan authorities, and foreign nationals.
The Security Council’s designation of the TTP as a growing and serious threat fully and strongly supports Pakistan’s narrative. This recognition ensures that Pakistan’s security concerns are taken seriously at the international level and places a responsibility on regional countries to take concrete action against the TTP. Pakistan has consistently maintained that the proscribed TTP is a large, organized, and escalating threat. The acknowledgment of this fact by the UN Security Council serves as international validation of Pakistan’s position.
For the past two years, Pakistan has been raising concerns over the intensification of TTP attacks, particularly terrorism in border areas, attacks on security forces, and the planning of operations from Afghanistan. The UN report confirms these concerns. Pakistan has repeatedly stated that the TTP enjoys safe havens in Afghanistan. If a UN report or briefing mentions the TTP’s growing presence or capabilities in the region, it indirectly reinforces Pakistan’s position that the group is being facilitated across the border.
When a global organization identifies the TTP as a serious threat, it legitimizes Pakistan’s security measures, border controls, and diplomatic demands with Afghanistan in the eyes of the world. Pakistan has maintained that the TTP is not only a threat to Pakistan but to the entire region. The UN’s acknowledgment strengthens Pakistan’s position on regional security.
On the other hand, over the past two decades, Pakistan has displayed courage, resilience, and sacrifice in fighting terrorism, which stands as a unique example globally. Despite the sacrifices of millions of civilians and thousands of security personnel, Pakistan dismantled the fundamental infrastructure of terrorist organizations, limited their operations, and restored peace in its cities. This struggle was not only for Pakistan; the international community has repeatedly recognized that Pakistan’s efforts have protected the entire region and the world from the severe impacts of terrorism.
Pakistan’s role in UN peacekeeping missions needs no introduction. Pakistan is among the leading contributors to peacekeeping, has served in over 60 countries, and hundreds of Pakistani personnel have sacrificed their lives for global peace. These contributions reflect Pakistan’s ongoing and sincere commitment to world peace.
Today, Pakistan continues to fight the battle of righteousness against threats such as terrorism, extremism, and drug trafficking. Repeated recognition by international organizations that certain groups are growing threats in the region strengthens Pakistan’s stance and justifies its struggle on the global stage. Considering Pakistan’s role in global peace, it is not an exaggeration to say that Pakistan remains a reliable and key pillar of international peace, walking the path of truth and justice.
