PPP demands election schedule for Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly amid months-long delay in polls

The Pakistan Peoples Party has demanded the immediate announcement of an election schedule for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, expressing concern over months-long delays in the polls. Party leaders said timely elections are a constitutional requirement and essential for ensuring democratic continuity in the region.

According to reports, the polls were initially scheduled for January but were postponed due to harsh winter conditions and logistical challenges. However, no new date has been announced so far, creating uncertainty among political parties and voters.

Officials from the caretaker government said the responsibility for announcing the schedule lies with the Election Commission Gilgit-Baltistan, which has yet to finalise a new timeline. Political stakeholders fear further delays could push elections beyond mid-year, possibly even to later months.

Analysts note that the continued delay has raised concerns about governance and decision-making in the absence of an elected assembly, with several key issues and development projects awaiting approval.
