Lebanon’s President Says Negotiations Ongoing To Extend Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire

Lebanon’s president says negotiations ongoing to extend Lebanon-Israel ceasefire

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has confirmed that negotiations are currently underway to extend the fragile ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, as diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent a renewed outbreak of hostilities in the region.

According to officials, Lebanon is actively engaging in US-mediated talks aimed at prolonging the existing truce, which was initially agreed as a 10-day ceasefire to halt fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. The ceasefire, however, remains fragile, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

President Aoun has emphasized the importance of extending the ceasefire as a first step toward broader negotiations, including issues such as Israeli troop withdrawal, border security arrangements, and detainee exchanges. He reiterated that Lebanon seeks a long-term and stable resolution rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.

Talks are expected to continue in Washington, where delegations from both sides are working with US officials to bridge differences. Israel has signaled openness to discussions but maintains firm demands regarding Hezbollah’s disarmament and security guarantees along its northern border.

The current ceasefire, brokered earlier this month, marked a rare moment of direct engagement between Lebanon and Israel after decades of hostility. However, ongoing tensions, sporadic clashes, and deep mistrust continue to threaten its sustainability.

Analysts warn that while negotiations offer a window for de-escalation, the situation remains highly volatile. Without tangible progress, the ceasefire could collapse, potentially reigniting conflict and further destabilizing the already tense Middle East landscape.
