Iran FM Araghchi says he discussed conditions for continuing US talks with ‘friends in Pakistan’
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that he discussed the conditions for continuing negotiations with the United States during his recent visit to Pakistan, referring to Pakistani leadership as “friends” involved in facilitating the diplomatic process.
According to reports, Araghchi held detailed consultations with Pakistani officials on “in what direction and under what conditions talks can move on,” highlighting Islamabad’s key role in ongoing mediation efforts.
The remarks come amid stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with both sides struggling to find common ground on critical issues such as Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and maritime security. Despite multiple rounds of talks, deep mistrust continues to hinder progress.
Sources indicate that Iran is seeking clearer guarantees and changes in US policy before committing to further dialogue, while also exploring alternative proposals—some reportedly involving phased agreements or delaying contentious nuclear discussions.
Pakistan, which hosted earlier rounds of talks in Islamabad, remains actively engaged in backchannel diplomacy, aiming to revive negotiations and maintain a fragile ceasefire between the two sides. US officials have also acknowledged Pakistan’s continued involvement in the process.
Analysts say Araghchi’s comments underline both the importance of Pakistan’s mediation and the complexity of the negotiations, noting that any resumption of talks will depend on mutually acceptable conditions and a reduction in tensions on the ground.
