PMD Issues GLOF Alert for GB, KP as Westerly Wave Approaches

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a fresh westerly weather system approaches the country.

According to the PMD, rising temperatures combined with expected rainfall could increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas.

Authorities have advised residents, tourists, and local administrations to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel to high-risk regions during the forecast period.

Relevant departments have been directed to monitor the situation closely and ensure preparedness for any weather-related emergencies.

The alert comes as seasonal weather patterns continue to pose risks to communities living near glaciers and mountain valleys.

Analysts say timely precautionary measures and public awareness will be essential to reducing the impact of potential flooding and protecting lives and property.
