Asim Munir Holds High-Level Security Talks in Türkiye Amid Regional Uncertainty
ISLAMABAD: As regional security undergoes a profound realignment amid heightened tensions stretching from South Asia to the Middle East, Pakistan and Türkiye have moved to reinforce their longstanding strategic partnership, with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir holding extensive talks with the Turkish political and military leadership during a high-level official visit to Ankara focused on defence cooperation, regional stability and evolving geopolitical challenges.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), HJ, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, was accorded a warm welcome upon his arrival in Türkiye, reflecting what both countries described as their historic and brotherly ties.
During the visit, the Field Marshal called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of National Defence Yaşar Güler. The meetings focused on matters of mutual interest, regional security and ways to further deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
At the Turkish General Staff Headquarters, the Field Marshal was presented with a Guard of Honour before holding detailed talks with General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, Chief of the Turkish General Staff. The two military leaders reviewed the regional security landscape and discussed professional military cooperation.
In recognition of his role in strengthening bilateral military ties, General Bayraktaroğlu conferred the Turkish Armed Forces Distinguished Service Medal on Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The Field Marshal also visited the Turkish Land Forces Headquarters, where he was received by General Metin Tokel, Commander of the Turkish Land Forces.
During his stay, the Field Marshal paid homage at Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, laying a floral wreath and honouring the founder of modern Türkiye. The gesture highlighted the historical affinity and enduring friendship between the two nations.
The ISPR said the visit reflected the resolve of Pakistan and Türkiye to further strengthen their multifaceted defence relationship and continue working together for regional peace and stability.
Pakistan and Türkiye have steadily expanded defence cooperation over the past decade through joint military exercises, defence production projects, intelligence cooperation and regular exchanges between their armed forces. Türkiye has also emerged as one of Pakistan’s key defence partners, with collaboration ranging from naval modernisation programmes to aerospace and defence technology.
The visit comes at a time when the regional security environment has become increasingly volatile. Continuing instability in the Middle East following the Iran-US confrontation, persistent conflicts in Gaza and Syria, and renewed strategic competition among major powers have prompted regional militaries to strengthen partnerships and enhance coordination on emerging security challenges.
For Pakistan, closer engagement with Türkiye also reflects Islamabad’s broader effort to diversify its strategic partnerships beyond South Asia while working with trusted allies on issues including counterterrorism, maritime security, defence industrial cooperation and regional stability. Analysts say growing Pakistan-Türkiye military cooperation is likely to assume greater significance as both countries seek to navigate an increasingly uncertain geopolitical landscape spanning the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean and South Asia.
