Modi Government Suffers Setback as Education Minister Resigns

ISLAMABAD: India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned from his position, a move that is seen as a major victory for youth protesters nationwide who were demanding that minister quit and take responsibility for examination paper leaks.

India’s biggest street protests of recent years had become a political flashpoint, posing one of the biggest challenges to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as opposition politicians joined youngsters’ calls to demand action and disrupted parliament.

The minister announced his resignation on X just as police fired tear gas to scatter young protesters in Delhi, hours before their leaders were set to hold another round of talks with ministers to push for the move.

In a two-page statement shared on X, Pradhan said he has sent his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Considering the situation that has developed at Jantar Mantar and across the country — that anti-national forces should not take advantage of this situation, that the unity of the country should be preserved, that not even a single Indian student’s future should get entangled in legal complications, and that our children should devote their time to studies and focus on building their careers — I have sent my resignation to the honourable prime minister,” The Times of India quoted the letter as stating.

The student-led agitation over examination paper leaks has evolved into one of the most significant domestic political crises faced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government during its current term. What began as protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations gradually expanded into a nationwide campaign demanding accountability, transparency and reforms in India’s recruitment and education systems.

The unrest gained political momentum as opposition parties rallied behind the protesting students, accusing the government of failing to safeguard the integrity of examinations that determine the future of millions of young Indians. The issue repeatedly disrupted proceedings in parliament, with opposition lawmakers pressing the government to fix responsibility for the alleged lapses and ensure justice for affected candidates.

Analysts say the controversy has exposed growing public frustration among India’s youth over unemployment and the perceived mismanagement of recruitment examinations.
