UK Police Question Five Men Held Near Airbase Used by US to Strike Iran
British counterterrorism police are questioning five men detained near RAF Fairford, an airbase in Gloucestershire that has been used by the United States for military operations against Iran.
The men were arrested early Sunday after police received a report about three suspicious vans apparently travelling towards the military airfield. They are being held on suspicion of explosives-related offences and the preparation of a terrorist act.
Police established a 400-metre security cordon around the vehicles, while Army bomb-disposal specialists examined them. Around 85 nearby households were evacuated as a precaution during the operation.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive. Reuters reported that investigators are examining several possibilities, including a potential Iranian link, while Russian sabotage and an Islamist plot are also being considered.
US President Donald Trump said the suspects had been under investigation by British and American authorities and were allegedly planning to cause major damage. British officials have declined to speculate on the motive while the investigation remains active.
RAF Fairford has become strategically significant in the ongoing conflict because US bombers have operated from the base during strikes on Iranian targets. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had previously warned that bases used for attacks against Iranian territory could be considered legitimate targets.
The investigation remains ongoing as British authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the arrests and any possible links to the wider conflict between Iran and the United States.
