Google Unveils Gemini 4 Argon After Months of Delay
Google has unveiled Gemini 4 Argon, the flagship model in its new Gemini 4 generation, after months of delays that had raised questions about the company’s pace in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.
Google says Argon is its most capable AI model yet for complex, long-duration workloads, with applications spanning software engineering, enterprise knowledge work, finance, legal tasks and cybersecurity.
The company says the model supports an industry-leading one-million-token output limit, allowing it to handle significantly longer and more complex tasks in a single workflow. Google has also highlighted performance on several coding, business automation and cybersecurity benchmarks.
Argon is initially being made available to selected cybersecurity partners through Google’s Fairwind Program rather than released publicly. Google says broader access will begin with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers, although it has not provided a specific public release date.
Google is also scrapping plans to release Gemini 3.5 Pro, which had previously been expected earlier in 2026. Reuters reports that changes within Google’s AI organisation accompanied the delays to its model roadmap.
The launch places Argon back at the centre of competition among Google, OpenAI and Anthropic, with Google seeking to strengthen its position in advanced AI while emphasizing both performance and cost.
