Pakistan and Russia are seeking to strengthen bilateral security cooperation amid evolving regional security challenges, with both countries emphasising closer institutional linkages and coordination between their security establishments.

The two sides have expanded engagement in recent years through counterterrorism cooperation, military-to-military contacts and joint exercises. The Pakistan-Russia Joint Military Consultative Committee has provided an institutional mechanism for discussing defence and security issues, while joint military exercises, including the Druzhba series, have focused on counterterrorism training and operational coordination.

Cooperation between Islamabad and Moscow has gained importance as both countries face security challenges linked to terrorism, militancy and instability in Afghanistan. Russia has expressed concerns over the presence of international terrorist organisations in Afghanistan, while Pakistan continues to grapple with cross-border militancy. These shared concerns provide scope for intelligence exchanges and closer coordination, although differences in regional priorities remain.

The latest engagement came when Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The meeting focused on bilateral security cooperation and the regional security environment. The visiting minister appreciated Pakistan’s contributions to regional peace and stability and acknowledged the professionalism and sacrifices of its armed forces in the fight against terrorism, according to the official statement.
