No New Russia Sanctions as Trump-Ukraine Relations Hit a Low

The United States has not announced new sanctions against Russia as relations between President Donald Trump and Ukraine continue to face serious challenges. The development comes amid ongoing efforts to address the war and pressure Moscow toward a settlement.

The absence of fresh punitive measures has raised questions about Washington’s approach to Russia, particularly as Ukraine continues to seek stronger international support for its defence and security.

President Trump signed an executive order on October 16 waiving key sanctions, restrictions and tariffs under the newly enacted Russia sanctions law, citing U.S. national interests. The decision came shortly before the measures were due to take effect and followed a reported agreement involving Russian diesel supplies.

The move has intensified concerns over Washington’s commitment to Ukraine, particularly as Kyiv faces continued Russian attacks and seeks sustained military and financial assistance from its Western partners.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged supporters to defend the sanctions, while the U.S. decision has drawn criticism from lawmakers who argue that easing pressure on Moscow could weaken Ukraine’s position in the conflict.
