Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Reaffirm Strategic Defence Cooperation
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi officials have expressed “satisfaction over the progress made under the framework of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement and underscored the importance of strengthening defence collaboration, institutional linkages and strategic coordination”.
Dr. Rajeh Tami Albugamy, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir , at General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi.
During the meeting, matters of mutual interest and regional security dynamics were discussed. Both the dignitaries expressed satisfaction over the progress made under the framework of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement and underscored the importance of strengthening defence collaboration, institutional linkages and strategic coordination.
The COAS & CDF congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment and expressed confidence that his tenure would further contribute to strengthening the longstanding fraternal ties between Pakistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, rooted in shared faith, mutual trust and strategic partnership.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have maintained close defence and security ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1947. Their cooperation has encompassed military training, the deployment of Pakistani military personnel to Saudi Arabia, defence assistance and intelligence coordination. Pakistan has also contributed to the training and professional development of Saudi armed forces, while the two countries have regularly consulted on regional security challenges.
Defence cooperation gained momentum during the Cold War, particularly following the expansion of Saudi Arabia’s security partnerships in the 1960s and 1970s. Pakistani military personnel served in Saudi Arabia in advisory, training and other support roles, while successive Pakistani governments viewed the kingdom’s security as an important element of their broader regional engagement. The relationship has also been reinforced by economic cooperation, including Saudi financial assistance to Pakistan during periods of economic pressure.
The two countries have continued to strengthen their security partnership amid changing regional threats, including instability in the Middle East, terrorism and tensions in the Gulf. Their cooperation has included joint military exercises, high-level defence exchanges and consultations on regional developments. Saudi Arabia has also remained an important economic partner for Pakistan, providing financial support and energy-related assistance, while Islamabad has emphasised its commitment to the kingdom’s security and territorial integrity.
The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement represents a further effort to institutionalise bilateral defence cooperation and improve strategic coordination. Its implementation provides a framework for advancing defence collaboration and strengthening institutional links between the two countries. The latest meeting at GHQ between Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Saudi Ambassador Dr Rajeh Tami Albugamy reflects the importance both sides attach to sustaining their longstanding strategic partnership amid an evolving regional security environment.
