Solano Targets Semi-Final Qualification, Expresses Confidence in Local Talent

Islamabad: Pakistan men’s national football team head coach Norberto Solano has identified reaching the semi-finals as the immediate target ahead of the SAFF Championship 2026, emphasizing that every match must be treated like a final.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Solano said every match would be challenging, but the team remains confident. He added that Pakistan has previously won in the Maldives and played in Indonesia, giving the team a clear understanding of what to expect.

Pakistan will face India and the Maldives in the group stage. Solano described the Pakistan-India encounter as a high-intensity rivalry, similar to the football rivalry between Peru and Chile.

The head coach explained that diaspora players would not be available for the opening matches due to the absence of a FIFA international window. However, he stressed that this would not be an excuse, as he has full confidence in local players. He also made it clear that the national team door is open to every player who possesses talent and the right mindset.

Discussing the team’s defensive strategy, Solano said the first priority would be to avoid conceding goals, adding that Pakistan has strong players in defence. He also mentioned that the 0-4 defeat against Thailand in Indonesia had taught the team the importance of maintaining focus throughout all 90 minutes.

Solano welcomed the planned launch of a professional football league next year, saying it would help address issues related to players’ fitness and the lack of proper pre-season preparation.

Pakistan will begin its SAFF Championship campaign against India on Thursday.
