Wheat Policy To Protect Farmers From Market Uncertainties

The third meeting of the National Wheat Monitoring Committee was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain. The meeting reviewed the progress made in the establishment of provincial implementation units in the provinces/regions for the enforcement of the Interim National Wheat Policy. The agenda also included deliberations on the current wheat stock disposal plans and the model for procurement of strategic wheat reserves through the private sector.

The committee was informed that all provinces and regions have successfully established their provincial implementation units for the enforcement of the Interim National Wheat Policy, ensuring coordinated and effective implementation across the country.

Under the disposal plan agenda, all provinces shared details of their available wheat stocks along with the relevant disposal strategies.

Regarding the model for procurement of strategic wheat reserves, it was stated that Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan will carry out purchases through private sector companies.

The Federal Minister said that the primary objective of the National Wheat Policy is to stabilize wheat prices for farmers and protect them from market uncertainties. He emphasized that the policy has been carefully designed to ensure food security and maintain price stability, and its full implementation will not impose any unnecessary burden on consumers.

He further stated that the policy promotes transparency, encourages private sector participation, and enhances coordination between the federal and provincial governments. He expressed confidence that effective implementation of the National Wheat Policy will establish a sustainable and balanced wheat market, benefiting farmers, consumers, and the national economy.
