Immediate reopening of Strait of Hormuz without restrictions ‘vital’ for the world, EU chief says
European Union officials have called for the immediate and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that unrestricted maritime access through the critical waterway is “vital” for global economic stability and energy security.
According to the EU leadership, continued disruptions or partial closures of the strait risk triggering severe consequences for global oil supplies, shipping routes, and international markets. The statement comes amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf, where naval activity and geopolitical friction have raised fears of prolonged instability.
EU officials emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass daily. Any restrictions, they warned, could lead to sharp increases in energy prices and wider economic uncertainty.
The appeal also reflects growing international concern over escalating regional tensions involving Iran and the United States, as well as the broader security situation in the Middle East. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to prevent further escalation and restore normal maritime operations.
Analysts say the EU’s statement adds pressure on all parties involved to de-escalate the situation, as global markets remain highly sensitive to disruptions in energy supply routes. They add that restoring full stability in the Strait is seen as essential to avoiding a wider economic shock.
