Ceasefire in Iran and Lebanon must hold through diplomatic efforts: European Commission president
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stressed that the fragile ceasefires in Iran and Lebanon must be preserved through sustained diplomatic efforts, as regional tensions continue to threaten stability.
In recent remarks aligned with European Union positions, EU leadership emphasized that diplomacy remains the only viable path to achieving a lasting resolution. Officials called on all parties to fully respect ceasefire agreements and avoid further military escalation across the region.
The EU has also urged an immediate halt to hostilities in Lebanon, highlighting the heavy toll ongoing clashes are taking on civilians. Leaders stressed the importance of protecting civilian infrastructure and ensuring adherence to international law during the conflict.
At the same time, European officials underlined that maintaining the ceasefire in Iran is critical not only for regional peace but also for global economic stability, particularly given disruptions to key energy routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement comes amid continued violence in southern Lebanon and uncertainty surrounding US-Iran negotiations, raising concerns about the durability of current ceasefire arrangements.
Analysts say the EU’s stance reflects growing international pressure to prioritize diplomacy and prevent a wider regional conflict, warning that failure to uphold ceasefires could trigger further instability and economic disruption worldwide.
