JD Vance Says Iran Agrees To IAEA Inspectors’ Return Amid ‘Great Progress’ In Talks
US Vice President JD Vance has said that Iran has agreed to invite inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency back into the country, describing the move as a major breakthrough in ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking after talks in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, Vance said “great progress” had been made in recent discussions and that both sides had laid a strong foundation for a final agreement. He added that technical-level negotiations on the scope and timing of inspections could begin as early as this week.
According to Vance, the return of IAEA inspectors is a key component of the broader US-Iran framework aimed at ensuring transparency over Iran’s nuclear programme and addressing concerns surrounding its enriched uranium stockpile.
The vice president said the proposed agreement includes mechanisms for international oversight and confidence-building measures designed to prevent further escalation in the region. He expressed optimism that continued diplomacy would lead to a comprehensive and lasting accord.
Iran has not yet publicly confirmed the details outlined by Vance, while officials from both countries have indicated that several implementation issues remain under discussion.
Analysts say the return of IAEA inspectors would mark a significant step towards restoring international monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities and could help strengthen broader efforts to stabilise the region.
