UK Airbase Scare Deepens as Police Find Petrol, Not Explosives

A security scare near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire has taken a new turn after British counterterrorism police confirmed that no improvised explosive devices were found in three vans linked to five arrested men. Police said a quantity of petrol was recovered from the vehicles.

The five men, all British nationals in their 20s from London, were arrested on Sunday after suspicious vehicles were reported near the US-operated airbase, which has been used by American aircraft in military operations against Iran.

The discovery prompted a major security response, including a cordon around the area and the evacuation of around 85 nearby households as bomb-disposal and counterterrorism teams examined the vehicles. Residents were later allowed to return home.

The suspects were released on police bail but remain under investigation. Authorities said investigators are examining multiple possibilities and have not established the motive or whether the incident was connected to a foreign state.

US officials have raised concerns over the incident, while Iran has categorically denied involvement. British authorities have urged against speculation as the investigation continues.

The case has attracted international attention because RAF Fairford is a strategically important base used by US forces. The incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the conflict involving Iran and the wider security risks facing US and British military facilities.

Counterterrorism investigators are continuing to examine the vehicles, electronic devices and other evidence as they seek to establish why the men were near the sensitive military site and whether any criminal or security threat was involved.
