Pakistan Reaffirms Sanctions Compliance Amid Iran-US Mediation Efforts
ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office Spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan on Thursday said that as a responsible member of the international community, Pakistan will adhere to “all applicable sanctions regimes in accordance with international and domestic laws”.
“Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to a rule-based international system rooted in multilateralism and international law, and we remain in constant and constructive communication with all relevant stakeholders,” he tells a press briefing.
Khan adds that while Islamabad highly values its strategic partnership with Washington and remains fully committed to further strengthening long-standing ties, it stresses its strict adherence to international norms and established frameworks.
“Pakistan, being a mediator in communication between Iran and the United States, believes that it is important to continue urging both sides to exercise restraint, resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and diplomacy, and honour their respective commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” he states.
“Pakistan believes that this is the only viable pathway to resolving the conflict amicably and peacefully, in the larger interest of global peace and security.
The statement comes amid Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with both Iran and the United States over the conflict, with Islamabad seeking to maintain communication channels with the two sides while avoiding any escalation in regional tensions. Pakistan has repeatedly presented dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of addressing differences between Tehran and Washington.
Islamabad’s position also reflects the challenge of balancing its strategic relationship with the United States with its longstanding ties with neighbouring Iran. By stressing compliance with applicable sanctions and international law, Pakistan is seeking to clarify that its mediation efforts do not alter its obligations under international and domestic legal frameworks.
Pakistan’s reference to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding underscores its effort to preserve a diplomatic mechanism for communication between Iran and the United States. Islamabad has maintained that continued restraint, fulfilment of commitments and direct or mediated dialogue are essential to creating conditions for a negotiated settlement and preventing the conflict from widening further.
