Founder of India’s ‘Cockroach’ Movement Arrested, Media Reports

The reported arrest of the founder of India’s “Cockroach” movement has drawn attention to the group and the circumstances surrounding the detention. The development has been reported by media outlets, although further details require confirmation.

The arrest has raised questions about the movement’s activities, its objectives, and the reasons behind the reported action by authorities.

Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), was reportedly arrested in New Delhi ahead of a rally demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police reportedly took preventive action to avoid a potential breach of public order.

The rally attracted hundreds of demonstrators waving Indian national flags. The protest was part of a wider campaign against revisions to voter lists, which opposition groups claim unfairly benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Cockroach Janta Party and student organisations have continued mobilising support, making electoral transparency and voter rights central issues in their campaign. India’s Election Commission has denied allegations of political bias and stated that eligible voters whose names were wrongly removed can re-enrol.

The reported arrest adds to tensions between authorities and the youth-led movement, which has organised repeated demonstrations in the capital. Media reports said Dipke was expected to appear before a Special Executive Magistrate.
