Police Lost Control During French Protests, Says Interior Minister

France’s interior minister has acknowledged that police lost control during protests, raising concerns about public order and the authorities’ response to demonstrations. The statement highlights the challenges faced by security forces in managing large-scale unrest.

The remarks come amid tensions surrounding protests in France, where clashes between demonstrators and police have drawn attention to crowd-control measures and the handling of public gatherings.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that security forces had been insufficiently prepared for the scale of the demonstrations. The protests were driven by anger over the rising cost of living and concerns about conditions in schools, while some gatherings escalated into looting, fires and clashes with police.

French President Emmanuel Macron rejected Nuñez’s offer to resign and ordered a review of security planning and intelligence failures. The government is now under pressure to restore public order while addressing the grievances that contributed to the demonstrations.
