Lahore Tops Global Pollution Index as Heavy Smog Blankets the City

Lahore has topped the global pollution index amid a thick blanket of smog, raising serious concerns about air quality and public health across Pakistan’s second-largest city.

The worsening conditions have reduced visibility and increased concerns over residents’ exposure to polluted air, particularly for children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions.

The pollution crisis is associated with several factors, including vehicle emissions, industrial activity, construction dust and seasonal agricultural burning. Weather conditions can further trap pollutants near the ground, intensifying smog.

The deteriorating air quality highlights the need for stronger pollution-control measures, improved monitoring and coordinated efforts to reduce emissions across the region.

Residents are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activities during severe pollution episodes and follow official health and air-quality advisories.
